The House of Representatives and the Senate met in a joint session of Congress to count the 2024 Electoral College votes and certify Donald Trump and J.D. Vance as the next President and Vice President of the United States.
The House convened the 119th Congress by establishing a quorum and electing a speaker. Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) was reelected on the first ballot, 218-215. Initially three Republicans voted for other House members, leaving Representative Johnson two shy of the 218 votes needed for a majority, but Republican Representatives Ralph Norman (SC) and Keith Self (TX) later changed their votes.
